Think Outside Your Website – Create a Web Presence

Today’s world provides website owners with plenty of options when it comes to marketing their website.  Traditional means of advertising, word-of-mouth, and networking still apply, but in today’s technological world, social media has opened many more options in getting websites visible on the internet.

One of the number one failures small businesses have today when it comes to their website is they don’t know how to generate web traffic to it.  After all, what good is your website if no one visits it?  Through the use of social media, business owners can get a leg up on their competition by generating web traffic to their website through the internet.

Examples of social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, allow for the exchange of ideas, thoughts, and content between users.  According to Wikipedia , individuals have spent more time on social media sites through their PC’s and mobile devices over the past few years; from 88 billion minutes spent on social media sites in July 2011 to over 121 billion minutes in July 2012.  The increase in social media usage has opened the door for businesses to use social media sites to attract potential customers to their website.

Before just plunging headfirst into the social media world in hopes of driving traffic to your website, website owners should device a plan on the audience they are trying to attract and the message they are looking to deliver.  Just like traditional marketing methods, social media methods need a strategy behind them or they will just die on the vine.

Strong and effective content on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, two of the better known social media sites available, can direct users and potential customers directly back to your website.  YouTube is another strong social media site that can effectively generate traffic back to your website.  Videos with link-backs to your website can provide users and potential customers with a quick idea of your service and how to find you.

Blogging is another effective tool in generating traffic back to your website.  There are plenty of social blogs available where you can provide content and link-backs back to your website.  Providing RSS feeds from your own website helps promote users and customers back to you.

Today’s technological world isn’t even our older brother’s world anymore when having a website was enough to say you had a web presence.   A web presence today goes much beyond the borders of your 8-10 page website.  A web presence is seeing and finding your website or business name on multiple search results.  Creating the website is the easy part.  Now it’s time to get to work on the web presence.
